South Pacific Tourism Organisation gets involved in the Sandwatch programme

In April 2023 the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) expressed interest in the Sandwatch Programme.
The SPTO is the mandated organisation representing tourism in the Pacific Islands region, based in Suva, Fiji, and with a mission to support sustainable tourism in the Pacific Islands. https://southpacificislands.travel/

Following discussions, a Sandwatch demonstration visit was arranged to two hotels on the Coral coast (west coast) of Viti Levu in Fiji on 7th July 2023.

The Matanivusi Resort is a beach eco-resort popular with surfers. On 7th July 2023, a team from the Matanivusi Resort, SPTO members and The Sandwatch Foundation, took part in a Sandwatch monitoring activity, using the Beach Records field data sheet. General observations and photographs were demonstrated and recorded, and beach characteristics such as beach width, sand size, wave action, longshore currents, water quality, human activities, and the presence of litter were measured.

The Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort in Sigotaka, Viti Levu, is a large hotel with a strong focus on sustainable tourism. On 7th July 2023 a team from the Outrigger, SPTO members and The Sandwatch Foundation, took part in a Sandwatch monitoring activity, using the Beach Records field data sheet. General observations and photographs were demonstrated and recorded, and beach characteristics such as beach width, sand size, wave action, longshore currents, water quality, human activities, and the presence of litter were measured.

Following the Sandwatch demonstration and data collection visit, the information was entered into the Beach Records platform and can be viewed at the links below:
