Sandwatch at Canico School, Madeira Island
2017: In Madeira this school year we are developing many activities related to the sea. We embraced a regional project of Ocean Literacy, developed by the Regional Secretariat of Education and led by the former president of the School’s Parents Association, one of the first enthusiasts of the “Reis Magos” beach sponsorship initiative, Dr. Sandra Brito.
At the end of the school year we are planning a whole week dedicated to the sea, with many sporting and artistic activities.
In the 13th of November our school received the visit of Dra. Ágatha Gil from CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research – University of Porto) who gave a presentation to parents and students from the 6th grade.
We had the opportunity to learn more about the SEACHANGE Project and the environmental contamination by Microplastics and their implications for the health of ecosystems, animal and human.
In Portugal the National Sea Day is celebrated on November 16. Several initiatives have taken place to show the importance of the sea for the economy and for national development. In our school the 7th grade classes made slogans and logos about the sea and presented an exhibition in the school hall warning for the importance of the Oceans and the need to preserve it.
This year our most traditional Sandwatch activity, the cleaning of the “Reis Magos” beach associated with the beach sponsorship initiative, was planned for the 13th of December but unfortunately was cancelled due to bad weather conditions. However the beach will be cleaned on a date yet to be defined with the collaboration of our usual partners.

This June (2017), our school, the Escola Básica do 2º e 3º Ciclos do Caniço and our main partner, the Four Views Oasis Hotel, promoted another environmental education action in the Reis Magos beach (Wise Man Beach). Once again, our long-time partners since the patronage of the beach cooperated. We still had the collaboration of several institutions, such as Parents Association, the City Council of Santa Cruz, the Parish Council, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation and the Caniço Pharmacy. -Please click here to see our complete details and our gallery of photos

Celebration of the World Environment Day
Jan 2017: To celebrate the World Environment Day, Galo Resort Hotels, in its environmental management program, organized a cleaning activity in a coastal zone, the “Ponta D'Oliveira” and in the sea, in the Natural Reserve of “Garajau”.
With the participation of the Natural Park of Madeira and the hotel’s employees and guests, students from the eighth grade and teachers from “Escola Básica do 2º e 3º Ciclos do Caniço” cleaned the area of Ponta D’Oliveira and collected around 100Kg of waste.
The company Manta Diving Center and its clients joined the initiative in the underwater cleaning of part of the Natural Reserve of “Garajau” and gathered more 10Kg of residues.
This was another example how the community working together can make a difference in the local environment and can inspire the younger generations to protect and preserve it.n - click here for more information and photos

Escola Básica do 2º e 3º Ciclos do Caniço – Madeira, promotes for the fifth consecutive year the cleaning of the “Reis Magos” Beach
Nov 18, 2016: For the fifth consecutive year, the students of “Escola Básica do 2º e 3º Ciclos do Caniço” with the co-ordination of the UNESCO Sandwatch Project, returned to the “Reis Magos” (Wise men) Beach and honoured their commitment to keep the beach clean.
On the eighth of April 2016, it was held the cleaning of the “Reis Magos” Beach. On this date, our special guests were the 4th Grade students of “Escola Básica do 1º Ciclo da Vargem”.
On the eighteen of November 2016 we returned to the beach, this time with forty seven 5th Grade students (from the project 5+), who had the help of teachers and the parent’s association.
Both activities were sponsored by our partners: Four Views Oasis Hotel, Natural Park of Madeira, City Council of Santa Cruz, Junta de Freguesia (Parish Council) and Caniço’s Pharmacy.
Once again we renewed our commitment with the continuity of the project, maintaining this privileged area of the city clean and promoting among students and the community at large the need to protect and care towards the environment and the importance of recycling.

Madeira: Cleaning the “Levadas” and ensuring good quality coastal waters
Madeira is an island of just 756 square kilometers, however, has a complex irrigation system consisting of a meandering channel network with over 1500 km. These channels are the “Levadas” which cross the steep topography of the island and are the result of an epic work that has been shaping the landscape for over five centuries. The “Levadas” are an important part of the cultural heritage of the island of Madeira. The first ones were soon built at the beginning of colonization in the fifteenth century, in order to irrigate the land. The North side of the island is rich in vigorous springs but is on the South side that are the most fertile but dry land. The cultivation of cereals, sugar, vines and banana was only possible thanks to these water paths that through steep cliffs and the Forest of Laurissilva, carry the water from where it springs up to where is needed. - Click here to see our full report and photos
